Scuba Divers' Photos Show a Plastic Underworld

Scuba divers from San Diego to Sydney have been uploading photos of plastic pollution they've plucked off the reef, during the global Beneath the Waves campaign organized by the Project AWARE Foundation. The organization is an international community of citizen scientists, educators, philanthropists and advocates, who see up close how our oceans are becoming landfills of trash—most of it plastic. According to the 5 Gyres Institute, there are approximately 269,000 metric tons of plastic in our oceans, about 75 percent of which is fishing gear.
