Plastic bags that have symbolized prosperity are increasingly clogging the capital of the West African nation of Ghana, Accra, and exacerbating deadly floods. Drains clogged by plastic bags overflowed in June, causing a massive flood that killed at least 150 people.
“It is an illustration of how this country of 26 million shifted from a success story to one struggling to manage its own prosperity,” reported the Wall Street Journal in June.
