Racing Extinction to Win

Of all the threats to biodiversity, plastic pollution may be the most harrowing. From the mining of raw materials to make plastic, to its manufacture, through its distribution, its consumption and its disposal, plastic is a pollutant in the natural world. And by definition, pollutants affect biology in harmful ways.

Scientists believe we have entered the sixth major extinction in Earth’s history, following the fifth great extinction which took out the dinosaurs. Our era is called the “Anthropocene,” or Age of Man, in which humanity has sparked a cataclysmic change of the world’s natural environment and all life within it.

RACING EXTINCTION, which opens today in select theaters worldwide, is a call to action for every one of us to examine our own behavior and personal choices, by zooming out and showing us the consequences of those choices. It examines why scientists predict that humanity’s footprint on the planet may cause the loss of half of all species by the end of the century.

The film is produced by the Oceanic Preservation Society, the group behind the Academy Award-winning film THE COVE, an expose of dolphin-hunting practices in Japan. RACING EXTINCTION exposes the black market wildlife trade, carbon emissions, and the acidification of our oceans, while attempting to inspire us all to embrace the solutions that will ensure a thriving, biodiverse world for future generations.

IT’S YOUR CHOICE: The RACING EXTINCTION website has a host of action plans you can choose from, to do your part to outrun extinction. See them here.
