Chemical Transfers and Migrations in Reusable Plastic Packaging

October 26, 2023 , 5:00 am 6:00 am EDT

Chemicals tend to migrate from plastic food contact materials into food or food simulants and could lead to unintended negative impacts on human health with the absorption of endocrine disruptors and carcinogens that could be released during reuse and accumulate during recycling.

According to the Database on Migrating and Extractable Food Contact Chemicals (FCCmigex), 372 of the 509 food contact chemicals identified, were detected to migrate from the material into food or food simulant. We possess very little data on hazard properties from chemicals such as monomers bisphenol A or PA oligomers to mitigate the risk and need further research. The current regulatory testing requirements also do not reflect the realistic daily routines of reusable plastics, including many cycles of dishwashing, heating, and microwaving.

How can we ensure that emission of substances of high concern and contamination of reusable packaging is avoided?

This webinar will be conducted in English and moderated by Nicole Seyring, content and publication lead, Planet Reuse.

Speakers include:

– Birgit Geueke, senior scientific officer, managing director, Food Packaging Forum

– Dorota Napierska, policy officer on toxic-free circular economy, Zero Waste Europe

– Casper van Uijtert, sales support coordinator, MEIKO North West Europe
