The Dirty South: Legacy Pollution in America’s Black Belt

December 14, 2023 , 6:00 pm 7:00 pm EST

Join Black Millennials for Flint and partners for a hybrid session on Facebook Live and at the MLK Library in Washington D.C.

While environmental injustice and racism are prevalent throughout the United States, the conditions in Southern states and cities are particularly devastating. From fighting the Byhalia Pipeline in Memphis, Tennessee, Cancer Alley in Louisiana, and Water and Sanitation issues in Alabama, America’s “Black Belt” has been and continues to be in a state of environmental peril.

This panel of freedom fighters will tell their stories of both their struggle and victories over polluters. Features: Kayla Shannon, Spelman College; Shamyra Lavigne, Rise St. James; Marquita Bradshaw, Sowing Justice; Madison Naves, GASP; and Roishetta Sibley Ozane, The Vessel Project.
