Impacts of food contact chemicals on human health: a consensus statement

Back to Resource Library

Food packaging, health, and plastic pollution experts highlight how plastic and other food contact materials can expose people to a mix of chemicals that threaten human health. The authors of this commentary describe areas of certainty, like the fact that chemicals migrate from food contact articles into food, and uncertainty, for example unidentified chemicals migrating into food. They show how current safety assessments of food contact chemicals is ineffective at protecting human health, and how areas of concern might be improved to benefit human and environmental health, and also reduce waste to support a circular economy.
