Plastic Pollution Advocacy Training

April 16 , 8:00 pm 9:00 pm EDT

Calling All Environmental Warriors!

Join co-hosts Heal the Bay and 5 Gyres for a FREE virtual advocacy training to combat plastic pollution in California. Learn the power of grassroots activism and how to lead impactful campaigns targeting local and state plastic reduction efforts at our VIRTUAL training.

Master the tools to make a difference:

  • Understand key plastic pollution policies.
  • Craft persuasive messages for decision-makers.
  • Make impactful calls to representatives.
  • Submit compelling written comments on legislation.

This plastic policy workshop will be lead by Heal the Bay’s Coastal and Marine Scientist, Emily Parker and 5 Gyres Institute’s Policy & Programs Director, Alison Waliszewski. We will cover Senate Bill 1167 (Blakespear), a bill that will promote the use of reusable cups in the state of California, and the City of Los Angeles Comprehensive Plastics Program. Our experts will teach you about these policies and then together we will take action and contact key decision-makers to express support for reducing plastic pollution in our communities!

This event is hosted in partnership with the Reusable LA Coalition, The Story of Stuff Project, The Surfrider Foundation, and Californians Against Waste.

*Zoom link will be shared to all registered attendees before the training begins!

February 27 , 10:30 am 4:00 pm EST

Please join the New York is Not Disposable Coalition and Beyond Plastics to meet with your state representatives in Albany and urge them to pass a strong Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act (S4246-a/A5322-a) and the Bigger Better Bottle Bill (S237/A6353).

We will meet at the Westminster Presbyterian Church at 85 Chestnut Street, Albany, 12210 at 10:30 am to hand out materials, orient you, provide a briefing, and get into groups before walking across the street to the Legislative Office Building and the Capitol Building.

Appointments with your legislators will take place between 12:00 and 4:00pm.

Rally on the Million Dollar Staircase (inside the Capitol Building) at 3pm.

We can achieve a world without plastic pollution but we need to build a bigger, more powerful grassroots movement to do it.

How can you help? That’s easy! Just register for the upcoming Beyond Plastics Trainings for Local Groups and Affiliates to learn practical and powerful ways to end plastic pollution and engage your larger community.

This online training is divided into two sessions that are each two hours long. You must complete both sessions, but you can attend them in any order you wish, and they are both offered twice to ensure you can find a time that works with your schedule.

We will cover the following:

  • Plastics 101 – Your background and guide to the plastics crisis, how it evolved, and what changes are necessary to solve it (spoiler alert: those changes are regulatory!);
  • Ready, set, action! – How ordinary people can make legislative change. Figure out who your elected representatives are, what powers they hold, and how to meet with them;
  • Essential media skills, such as how to hold a press conference, draft a strong news release, and write a letter to the editor that will get published;
  • Grassroots organizing skills, including organizing constituent meetings and call-in days;
  • Community education, such as how to host a virtual panel event; and
  • Many more skills and strategies you can use to make any campaign more effective.

Are you in?

Please register for one date each for sessions 1 and 2 that work best for you, then add the log-in information Zoom provides to your calendar.
