Watch musicians use items that typically end up in landfill–including plastic bottles, cartons, plastic bags, and PVC pipes–as inspiration in this multimedia performance “Trash Orchestra – Music of Trash.” Hosted by the U.S. Art in Embassies Program, musicians performed the concert in Warsaw, Poland, while artwork from Dianna Cohen, co-founder and CEO of Plastic Pollution Coalition was projected in the space.
“The performance started with sounds of the sea and drops of water,” explains Cohen. “Then images of plastic bags and bottles were projected on the walls and windows. The concert evolved through the life cycle of single-use plastic and even included the sounds of a garbage truck.”
“Trash Orchestra – Music of Trash” progresses through seven concepts: Air / Nature, Wood / Paper, Water, Glass, Dirt / Stones, Plastic, and Metal, and illustrates the clash of nature and civilization.
Americans alone discard more than 30 million tons of plastic a year; only 8 percent of it gets recycled. Plastic is made to last forever and cannot biodegrade; instead it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces.
